Communicate effectively to reduce conflict

On a recent walk, I came across an interesting billboard that said “I’m responsible only for what I say, not what you understand.”
How many conversations at work do we go through feeling the same way? Very often, we feel that because we have sent out a piece of communication, it has been understood and our job is over. This mindset can lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and damaged relationships.
Effective communication is not a one-way street; it’s a dynamic interplay between the sender and the receiver. The message is not fully delivered until it is understood and interpreted by the recipient in a way that aligns with the sender's intent. When communication is clear, conflict is reduced.
So, what can we do to improve our communication skills and avoid the pitfalls of miscommunication? Here are three essential tips:
1. Focus on the receiver: Tailor your message accordingly to ensure it is clear, relevant, and easily understood.
2. Seek feedback: Encourage questions and feedback to ensure the communication is received as intended.
3. Practice empathy: Try to see things from the other person's point of view.
So the next time you are communicating with someone in any setting (townhall, meeting, 1-on-1, etc.), just practice these 3 simple tips to ensure your communication is clearly received.
