Developing the next layer for an international MedTech firm
A global healthcare technology organisation wanted to strengthen the next layer of leadership within its IT team.
The need was not only to help leaders manage work better, but also to help them connect day-to-day execution with the larger organisational direction, communicate with greater strategic clarity and reflect on their leadership growth over time.
We designed Developing the Next Layer as a three-session leadership development journey for the IT team. Each session was conducted as a full-day intervention, followed by individual 1-on-1 coaching conversations with every participant. The coaching conversations helped participants talk through their application journey, reflect on what they had tried, identify visible improvements and work through the challenges they were facing in applying the learning at work.
The first session focused on understanding and aligning to the organisation vision. Participants explored why vision matters, how it provides direction, simplifies decisions, unites teams and defines success. The session also helped participants connect their own work and team goals to broader organisational priorities, and practise communicating the “why” behind their work.
The second session focused on strategic communication and storytelling for leaders. Participants worked on moving beyond technical updates and task completion, and learnt how to communicate impact, stakeholder value, risk reduction, team contribution and future capability. A key part of the session was helping leaders translate technical work into leadership messages that create clarity, credibility and stakeholder confidence.
The third session was designed as a learning retrospective. Participants revisited the learning from the earlier sessions, shared real moments where they had tried to apply the concepts, discussed what worked well, identified what was difficult and created a practical way forward.
The topics covered included:
Understanding organisational vision and why it matters
Aligning team goals with organisational and functional priorities
Communicating the “why” behind decisions and initiatives
Moving from “messenger” communication to “leader” communication
Understanding stakeholders through a RACI lens
Strategic storytelling for leaders
Translating technical updates into leadership messages
Moving from activity to output, outcome and impact
Storytelling without sounding boastful
Stakeholder-specific communication
Reflection on application and leadership growth
5P Communication Preparation Model
The program was intentionally application-led. Activities such as the paper plane challenge, stakeholder discussions, storytelling practice, team reflections, concept cards, treasure hunt and retrospective exercises were used to help participants experience the concepts rather than only discuss them.
Through this journey, participants strengthened their ability to connect work with purpose, communicate more strategically, make impact visible and lead conversations with greater clarity and confidence. The 1-on-1 coaching after each session ensured that the learning did not remain limited to the classroom, but moved into real workplace application.
