Emotional Intelligence for a public-private sector skill development institution

A skill development institution was looking to strengthen the emotional intelligence, communication and influencing capability of ITI principals from across India.

ITI principals operate in a complex environment. They are expected to lead faculty and staff, engage with students, work with government systems, manage industry expectations, handle operational pressures and represent their institutions with maturity. In such roles, technical knowledge and administrative experience are important, but the ability to understand people, manage emotions, build trust and influence stakeholders becomes equally critical.

We designed an Emotional Intelligence program to help ITI principals strengthen their self-awareness, interpersonal effectiveness and stakeholder influence. The session connected emotional intelligence to the everyday realities of institutional leadership: managing teams, responding to pressure, understanding different perspectives, communicating with clarity and leading change across diverse environments.

The topics covered included:

  • Emotional intelligence and its relevance for institutional leadership

  • Self-awareness and introspection

  • Strengths, improvement areas and emotional triggers

  • Internal and external motivation

  • Empathy versus sympathy

  • Self-regulation under pressure

  • DISC communication framework

  • Communication do’s and don’ts for different styles

  • Social skills and influencing skills

  • Listening-first strategy

  • Principles of persuasion

  • 360-degree influencing approach

  • Stakeholder analysis

  • Sources of support and resistance

The workshop was highly interactive, with individual reflection, team activities, group discussions and practical exercises. Participants examined their own behaviour, discussed workplace realities and identified specific actions they could apply when leading their institutes.

Through this intervention, ITI principals built a stronger understanding of how emotional intelligence supports better leadership, healthier teams, stronger stakeholder relationships and more effective institutional outcomes.
